Summer’s here, and just like us, dogs need extra hydration to stay healthy and happy in the heat. The tricky part? They can’t tell us when they’re thirsty. In fact, dogs show signs of dehydration very differently than humans.
🐶 Signs your dog might be dehydrated:
- Dry or sticky gums
- Lethargy or low energy
- Sunken eyes
- Loss of skin elasticity (gently pinch the scruff—if it doesn’t spring back, they may be dehydrated)
- Heavy panting or drooling
- Reduced appetite
- Dark or minimal urine
Prevention is key! Here’s how to keep your pup cool, hydrated, and tail-wagging all summer long:
1. Add moisture to meals
Boost hydration at mealtime by mixing in water or unsalted, onion- and garlic-free broth. You can even make your own pup-safe broth at home using plain chicken and veggies (just skip the seasonings!).
2. Keep water bowls everywhere
Dogs are more likely to drink if it’s easy. Place clean, fresh water in multiple spots around your home, yard, or patio to encourage them to sip throughout the day.
3. Treat them to pupsicles 🍓
Nothing says summer like a frozen treat! Our Strawberry Watermelon Pupsicles are made with real fruit, coconut water, Greek yogurt, and our limited-edition Summer Celebration treats. They’re fun, hydrating, and made with ingredients both pups and paw-rents can enjoy.
4. Offer pup-safe hydration boosts
Want a little extra help? Coconut water (unsweetened and plain) can be a natural way to rehydrate—just offer a small amount occasionally, and make sure there are no added sugars or flavors.
5. Always bring water on walks
Even a short stroll can dehydrate your pup on a hot day. Keep a collapsible bowl and water bottle handy whenever you’re out and about.
6. Serve hydrating fruits & veggies
Snacks like watermelon, cucumber, celery, and lettuce are naturally high in water and super refreshing. Just make sure to avoid grapes, onions, and anything else not dog-safe.
Bottom line:
Hydration matters, but it doesn’t have to be boring. With a few easy tricks, keeping your dog cool and hydrated can be simple, fun, and something you both enjoy.
